i was looking at the palm z22, and maybe using it with a keyboard to take notes in lessons, instead of carrying around my laptop, is the z22 compatible with taking those sorts of notes, and will the irda keyboard work with it, because the irda port on the palm z22 is on the top will i have to put the palm upside down to make it work with the keyboard?
are there any other relativly cheap pda`s which would be good for taking notes in lessons, which are compatible with a keyboard?
    thanks barnaby

Everything you enter in the standard applications that come with PalmOS (the Operating system on the z22 and other "Palm" brand devices) synchronizes between the Palm and comprable desktop software.
The applications that come with it are pretty simplistic and you might find you want something that goes a bit beyond that -- in which case you`ll be pleased to find there is a great wealth of software you can download for your Palm.
Personally, I use a Z22 as my primary organizer. I don`t need smart phone functions, so the Z22`s small size and low price make it the perfect device for every day use for me. The biggest drawback is probably the lack of a card reader. With more expensive devices, you can insert SD cards for increased memory. With the z22, there`s no expansion. You have about 25M available.
I do a lot of outlining and note taking on my z22 for web development as well as general writing -- I use http://natara.com/bonsai/ which is an easy to use but powerful outliner that has both Desktop (PC) and Palm clients so you can work on the same outlines in either place. I think it would probably be ideally suited for taking notes in class. (There are many other outliners for the Palm as well, Bonsai is just the one I have the most experience with). Palms do come with a memopad built in -- which I do use for a lot of things -- but it won`t give you the organizational or surchable capabilities that a third party outliner will.

Far better than jotting it down using graffiti -- faster and likely more accurate.

would it be any good for taking notes? like in lessons?

All of the infrared keyboards I`ve owned have had a little folding arm to wrap around the back to the infrared port. (Subsequently, all of the PDA`s I`ve owned have had a top mounted infrared port)

Why was my reply deleted? I`ll try again, as I really don`t feel I violated any policy in making it. ( I wanted to edit it anyway. . .)
The IRDA has a mirror to reflect the infrared beam, so it ought to work. Top mounted infrared ports are common; every keyboard I`ve owned has accommodated this one one manner or another.

so can you store and create pages of notes on the palm z22 and save them, and then transfer them to a pc in a word document, or .txt file

I have been doing this for years, previously with my Palm V.
I take notes at conferences and seminars that I attend for my job quite regularly. Less to lug around and I find that I am not distracted constantly checking email, web stuff etc. I stay focused.
I then sync and cut and paste into this text database program I use for research purposes called Zoot. That way I am able to find all my notes from diverse sources sometimes years later. But you could easily create a word.doc entitled French History 101 or whatever.
The only downside is that the automatic powersave turns it off if I haven`t written anything in 2-3 minutes. So I have to turn it back on.
The Palm Universal Keyboard is small enough to fit into a jacket pocket while the Z22 is in my pants pocket.
