Does anyone know how to make a RIM BlackBerry (in my case a 6710) display Russian text?
I have found on Google a reference to someone called Kovalsky writing a programme which allowed his own unit to read and write Russian text.
Anyone?
You need to send SMS in UNICODE.
I tested my 7100 with BWC and BES accounts- both receive Russian emails just fine, even in the Subject line.
The reason I paid $400 for new Blackberry was to have Russian emails: if it weren`t working, I would be back to my old good b/w full keyboard blackberry in no time.
If your service provider gives you a hard time, tell them to enable UNICODE (UTF-8) on your account. Do not tell them you need Russian fonts, demand UNICODE support enabled.
Seriega,
Sorry to reply so late, but this forum no longer notifies me of additional messages, so I only saw your message by chance.
I have recently received a new replacement 8707v, which has a much expaded list of languages, including Russian, both with a Russian and US keyboard layout.
I have just exchanged it to 8310 Curve, which also has the same language selection options and will also type in Russian (again the same choice of keyboards). It also has autotext in Russian.
So, it would seem that the full keyboard handhelds with the latest software are capable of typing in Russian, although clearly the keys are engraved only with latin lettering. If you want a BlackBerry with a dual language keyboard, you will have to get it from MTS in Russia. They have recently announced, that they will after all start the service in Russia (which, I guess? is why the latest RIM software now does Russian.

Gentlemen,
I`ve tried a few sources on the web and this one seems to be almost the only one where people actually discuss the Russian fonts problem. I`ve read the whole thread but haven`t found a solution to my problem in what was discussed before.
I`ve recently got my 7100v (provider:Vodafone; my company is running a BES) and the handheld software version is 4.0.0.198 (should be the latest one for this particular type as of today, I reckon)
Similar problem: no Russian fonts in the e-mails. Only *** instead. Two observations in connection with this: Encoding doesn`t seem to be corrupt. When I forward those e-mails to anyone else, or just open them on a desktop machine - I can read Russian just fine The above would make me think, that it is the fonts problem on the device itself. Surprisingly, Russian reads just fine in Word attachments and also on web pages, when opened on BlackBerry. The problem only exists in the body of the e-mails.All my previous experience with Cyrillic issues on different machines/software tells me the problem is usually either with the encoding or with fonts. But both seems to be fine in this case, and it still doesn`t work
I`m really puzzled. Any help / opinion greatly appreciated.
Well, Iluxa,
what can I say? Change your provider to one that does support Unicode. In the UK this is Vodafone (may be others, but that is the one I use and the one that definitely works), but in the US you may look at waht Berry One writes.
Wish you luck.

Well - they told me that in "language" drop-down there is only "English"
We have not even heard about that one in poor old Europe. The number would suggest it is even newer than mine, but it may be for a different handset. Which model do you have?

BEIKS receives a lot of requests if the Russian dictionary can be somehow used to read Russian on BlackBerry (instead of question marks, squares or simply garbage).
The short answer is no, it is not possible.
However, a separate application add-on is being developed, which will address this very issue.
The following is required for a BlackBerry to show Russian text:
- Version 4.0 of software
- One of newer models colour blackberry
- email should be sent in UNICODE UTF-8.
You can receive Russian emails both on BWC and BES.
You must have colour blackberry, don`t ask me why.
Email sent in KOI-8 or Windows-Cyrillic will not show Russian charcters. It must be sent in UNICODE.
If you have ??????????????? in email on your device- it should mean that email was sent to you in UNICODE. All you need is the right device.
I can read Russian on my 7100 upgraded to 4.0 version of code. No other tricks had been done to my blackberry to make it read Russian.
